With greater efforts to improve health service delivery, especially the health of women and children, an emphasis is placed on improving the quality of reproductive health services and on preventing and reducing the impact of widespread communicable diseases, bridging gaps that prevent efficient and effective delivery of health services, and fostering partnerships that lead to improved health in Africa. Government and non-governmental organizations run a number of different health facilities, hospitals, maternity clinics, children's hospitals, HIV/AIDS wards, and alternative-medicine clinics in many cities and small rural villages. Access to basic healthcare is often one of the most challenging issues that low-income and neglected populations face. Community level intervention and local health clinics offer services to local families at minimal or no cost. With the introduction of a medical insurance in Ghana, attendance to health care facilities have skyrocketed making the support of volunteers indispensable. Working on health projects offers a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to become familiar with the challenges and health issues of developing countries.

VOLUNTEERS / INTERNS RESPONSIBILITIES
Your activities will depend largely on your experience, but may include some of the following:

  • Assisting doctors to examine cases and determine the next line of action, following up cases and ensuring that the right medication is dispensed, helping to take patients' histories and subsequent diagnosis, helping with general consultation activities. Observing procedures, undertaking office administration, health data recording and storage, taking care of patients reporting for out-patient care or on admission.
  • Changing bandages and monitoring recovery, checking blood pressure, distributing foods, weighing babies and helping with first aid treatment.

Many hospitals also work in collabration with the local communities, presenting different programs on health education, basic prevention, nutrition, and sanitation. Your presence is extremely helpful in such programs. Such health projects offer a wonderful opportunity for volunteers and students to be acquainted with the existing health issues and challenges of delivering health care in developing country like Ghana.

This is a project which benefits everybody; the project gains from your skills, experience and fresh perspective and you enjoy a valuable experience of life in one of Ghana’s leading medical centers. In your time off you’ll discover the lively capital city of Accra. It’s bound to be a world away from anything you’ve experienced before and your education certainly won’t stop at the hospital!

WHY THE PROJECT NEED INTERNS AND VOLUNTEERS
To improved basic healthcare to the poor in their own communities as a policy of mitigating poverty.
To offer health care education as a basis for improving the livelihood of the underprivileged communities.
To offer volunteers an opportunity to discover practical and innovative healthcare practice and first aid application with little or no resources.
