FREQUENTLY AS QUESTIONS

What are the necessary requirements to be a PHIVOG volunteer?
You must:

  • Be 18 or over
  • Persons under 18 can volunteer under the permission of their Guardians and signed agreements by Guardians
  • Have fully completed and returned to PHIVOG the Volunteer Application Form.
  • Have sent us information on your travel arrangements (flight number, airline, arrival and departure time and dates).

Can I take 'Time Out' to travel whilst volunteering?
You will always have weekends free to travel but if you would like longer, for example, one week off to travel, then you will need to notify PHIVOG or discuss with the PHIVOG Directors.
Please note that you will need to cover the costs of all travel additional to your placement. PHIVOG will happily give advice on travelling within Ghana. We greatly appreciate it if volunteers let us know where they are going on their road trips. Some placements may require you to be present on weekends.

What are the medical requirements for travelling in Ghana?
We advise you to contact your doctor or a travel clinic at least one month before travelling and get advice on travelling to Ghana, a tropical country.
We recommend that you have the following protection:

  • Yellow Fever Vaccine (Required for the Ghanaian Visa; good for ten years)
  • Typhoid (Required. Good for five years)
  • Immunoglobulin or Hepatitis A Vaccine (Strongly recommended. The vaccine requires re-immunization 6-12 months later, but is good for a much longer period)
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine (highly recommended)
  • Meningococcal Vaccine (Optional. Discuss with your doctor)

Will I be met at the airport and what happens if I am delayed?
PHIVOG volunteers OR interns will be met at the airport by a PHIVOG member of staff at the arrivals hall just outside the airport. Even if your flight is delayed (no matter what time)! Please keep an eye out for a sign with PHIVOG written on it.
Please make sure you send us your travel details to ensure we know when to pick you. The vast majority of international flights arrive late in the evening. This is not a problem for us and we are well used to picking volunteers OR interns up at 11pm and beyond.
